Self-taught Devon Keim finds inspiration on beach

By Vikki Matsis

The salt water, the waves and the art of surfing inspire Devon Keim’s art and photography. Her materials include acrylic paints, gels, sand, shells and rocks, among other things.

  • “Baby Wave” “Baby Wave”
  • “Aladdin” “Aladdin”

The Charleston native began painting in 2010 and has learned the art of putting paint to canvas as she goes.

“My style is mostly realism, but also abstract, and I’m currently working with some 3-D pieces,” Keim said. “Another passion of mine is photography. I take a lot of pictures of the beach and people surfing. If I take a picture that I really like, I will paint it.”

As a self-taught artist, she is looking for a space where her art would best fit in. Until then, she simply paints for the joy of it. View her work www.facebook.com/devon.keim.art.

My Mantra: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Matthew 6:34.

Upcoming travel plans (real or imagined): Australia or Hawaii

Last thing I do before I go to bed: Brush my teeth.

I am currently listening to: Dominic Balli.

Last book that I read: Not a big reader.

Favorite restaurant in Charleston: Tasi!

My daily routine consists of: Either working, going to Folly Beach, taking pictures, painting.

I am most grateful for: Everything I have, my family, friends, even my old, old car.

In five years, I will be: Maybe traveling, living overseas or still in Charleston, anything can happen.

If I knew then what I know now: I wouldn’t have made some mistakes that I did, but that’s how you learn, right?

Price range of artwork: Affordable.

Last thing that made me laugh: Probably my best friend Ashley. She’s crazy.

Last thing that made me cry: Hallmark commercial.

I wish: For my own art studio one day.

Would you rather win the lottery or fly into space?: Win the lottery. ... I would rather travel the world than go into space.
