Dollar Days: Take advantage of free outdoor fun

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Provided: Someone’s looking for a four-legged friend to hang out with.

It’s hard to believe it’s the middle of May! Where has this year gone? And why aren’t we spending more time outside enjoying this amazing weather?

  • The turtles in the Great Ocean Tank will be among the many featured at World Turtle Day at the South Carolina Aquarium. The turtles in the Great Ocean Tank will be among the many featured at World Turtle Day at the South Carolina Aquarium.

Not to worry, as there are a few great outdoor opportunities to take advantage of.

Yappy Hour

Congratulations! You and your dog have made it through most of the work week. How to celebrate? Why, taking your dog to Yappy Hour, of course!

Head out to the dog park at James Island County Park, 871 Riverland Drive, 4-8 tonight to enjoy an evening of live music and beverages. And the best part is you get to bring your best friend. Just remember that dogs must be leashed outside of the off-leash area.

Music will be performed by local band Folk Grass. This event is free with the $1 park admission. Drinks will be available for purchase; outside alcohol and coolers are prohibited.

Call 795-4386 or check out www.ccprc.comfor details.

Third Thursdays

Another event held tonight, this one 5-8, is Third Thursday in downtown Summerville, East Richardson Avenue and North Main Street.

The Art Walk features live music from the Ashley Ridge High Jazz Ensemble and Dan Mackey, who will be set up on Short Central. Classic cars will be on display, and food and drinks will be available as the shops and restaurants stay open late.

For details, call 821-7260 or go to www.summerville dream.org.

World Turtle Day

OK, so this event isn’t outside or free, but it’s too cool to pass up!

The South Carolina Aquarium, 100 Aquarium Wharf, which rehabilitates sea turtles and rereleases them into the wild (That’s outside!), will be hosting this special day to educate the public about the reptiles.

From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, check out education stations on sea turtles, saltmarsh turtles, land turtles and freshwater turtles. You’ll also get a chance to meet the teams that protect endangered sea turtles, as well as staff from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. Four tours will be offered of the Sea Turtle Hospital, during which you’ll get to meet some of the patients.

Tour tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids in addition to admission to the Aquarium. For information on this event or pricing, call 577-FISH (3474) or go to scaquarium.org.
