Greetings, Spoleto- fugees (festival refugees).

Typically about this time of year, I try to generate a Lunch Counter for those who may want to escape the downtown hustle and bustle of festival season.

And if you’re up for visiting the intersection of Midland Park and Stall Road in North Charleston, then I’ve found your perfect destination.

Milano’s Pizza and Subs, which neighbors Big T’s Laundromat, which neighbors Big T’s service station, caters to most appetites, featuring pizza and subs, but also fried chicken, pasta, hot dogs, hamburgers, wings and authentic tacos.

The fried chicken here isn’t exactly hand-battered, but rather it’s Krispy Krunchy Chicken, a quick-serve fried chicken concept usually housed in gas stations, supermarkets and such.

It’s “Cajun-style,” paired in combo meals with boudin bites, jambalaya, red beans and rice, and seasoned fries.

If you’re feeling particularly frisky, there’s even catfish on the menu.

Better options may lie with the hand-tossed pizzas in 10-, 12- and 14-inch versions ($7.99-$13.99) that include a meat lovers’ pie, Hawaiian pizza, combo special and another done up with Alfred sauce and chicken.

But the best choice? The tacos: asada, pollo, chorizo, pastor.

They are dressed with cilantro and onions.

At $1.50 each, any combo is likely better than a Krispy Krunchy value pack.

Ditto for the tortas, as homemade red and green sauce is made available in squeeze bottles.

So, true, maybe it’s not Spoleto territory, but Milano’s certainly grants a taste of the area that might otherwise go ignored.
