Latin American Festival
Wannamaker County Park in North Charleston will host the 21st Latin American Festival on Sunday. From noon-6 p.m., celebrate all things Latin American, from culture to food, dance to music. While the festival is sure to entertain with dance presentations, demonstrations, and information and craft booths, the main event is performances by Bachaco and Orquesta Mayor. This family-friendly event will also have children’s activities, including jump castles. Food and beverages from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean will be available for purchase. No pets, outside food or beverages are permitted. Tickets are $10, students and members of the military get in free with a valid ID; Gold Pass Holders and kids 12 and under get in free. Charleston Oktoberfest
Get a taste of Germany on Sunday at the ninth annual Charleston Oktoberfest, presented by Warsteiner beer. Enjoy Oompah band Roger Gootman Sauerkraut Band, authentic German dancers, a variety of delicious Oktoberfest food options and, of course, a wide selection of German beers. Oktoberfest will include a 64-team corn hole tournament to benefit East Cooper Meals on Wheels (register your team at eastcoastap.com) and numerous activities for kids, including jump castles, games, a Mountain Slide, soccer games and more. The 2012 Bavarian Challenge will run during the Oktoberfest festivities with local teams competing in a variety of events, including tug-o-war, barrel races, three-legged races and bratwurst-eating competitions. The event will be noon-5 p.m. Sunday at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island, which will be transformed into a Bavarian-style beer hall. The first 1,000 festival attendees will receive a free commemorative beer stein. Tickets are $5 in advance, $8 the day of, with kids 12 and under getting in free. Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour
Sunday should be a beautiful fall day for the Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour, which lets participants tour some of the area’s most beautiful homes and gardens while sampling treats prepared by some of the Lowcountry’s best chefs. This year, 10 homeowners along West Carolina Avenue are opening up their homes to attendees and businesses or chefs from more than 20 food and beverage distributors. The Kitchen Tour allows you to go at your own pace from 1:30- 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50, and proceeds go to the Dorchester Children’s Center. MOJA Arts Festival
The 29th annual MOJA Arts Festival, a celebration of African-American and Caribbean arts, continues this week. Promising a variety of events that include visual arts, theatre, music (classical, jazz, gospel, R&B), dance, poetry, storytelling and beyond, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy. One event you won’t want to miss is the R&B Concert: MAZE featuring Frankie Beverly and JOE. The show will be at 8 p.m. Saturday (gates open at 7 p.m.) at Johnson Hagood Stadium, 68 Hagood Ave. Tickets range from $30-$80. MOJA wraps up Sunday with the finale at Hampton Park, another don’t-miss event. Nearly half of MOJA’s events are free, with the remainder ranging from $5-$80. Gun Show
The South Carolina Arms Collectors Association is returning to the area after nearly 30 years to present its gun show, which will feature gun, knife and militaria dealers and exhibitors from around the Southeast. Held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the Charleston Area Convention Center, 5001 Coliseum Drive, admission is $8; kids 12 and under get in free. The SCACA, which holds nine other shows annually, gives out six scholarships every year and delivers grants to organizations such as the Confederate Museum, The S.C. Harvest Tour of Homes
Benefiting the Daniel Island Library, the Harvest Tour of Homes showcases four homes on the island. At each home, a meet-and-greet with a popular local author will be held, they also will be signing and selling copies of their work. Jack McCray Tribute Concert
On Sunday, join the Jazz Artists of Charleston and the Charleston Jazz Orchestra as they pay tribute to founding producer Jack McCray with a big band performance. From 4-7 p.m., Memminger Auditorium at 56 Beaufain St. will be taken over by lovers of jazz and friends of Jack, a former columnist for Charleston Scene. Enjoy an evening of good music (special guests are on tap) and good company as McCray’s life and legacy are celebrated. Tic- kets range from $25 (floor risers and the balcony) to $250 (table seating that includes premier seating, open bar and light hors d’oeuvres), and guests are encouraged to match their ticket price with a contribution to the Jack McCray Memorial Fund, which benefits the missions of JAC, CJO, the Charleston Jazz Initiative and the Jack McCray Literary Fund. Fall Festival
Freshfields Village, at the crossroads of Kiawah, Seabrook and Johns islands, celebrates the arrival of fall with a three-day festival. Sponsored in part by King Street Grille and Anheuser-Busch, this family-friendly event kicks off 6-9 p.m. Friday with a free concert by Palmetto Soul. The fun continues 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday with live music from the Chris Crosby Duo; children’s activities, including jump castles, a climbing wall, face painting, golf games and more; and a special Farmer’s Market. The Fall Festival concludes Sunday with the seventh annual American Music Celebration. From 2-7 p.m., enjoy free performances by Miss Wanda Johnson and The Upstate Rhythm Section, the Travis “Moonchild” Haddix Blues Orchestra, and Rick Estrin & The Nightcats. Chucktown After 5
Charleston’s latest happy hour concert series is asking people to party for a purpose Friday. From 5-9 p.m., the goal will be to raise money for Nick Collins, guitarist and vocalist for the band Fowler’s Mustache. The musician was seriously injured in a car accident, and the funds raised at this event will go toward helping pay hospital bills and other expenses the family has incurred. Fowler’s Mustache, as well as Stop Light Observation, will perform, and a silent auction will be held to raise additional funds. Pot Kettle Black food truck will be on-site. Oyster roast
From 6-10 p.m. Friday, head over to Alhambra Hall, 131 Middle St., in Mount Pleasant for an event benefiting the Association for the Blind. Local Music on the Farm
Take part in Adaptive Gardens’ third annual music event. From 1-5 p.m. Sunday, head out to Thornhill Farms, 10882 Highway 17 North, for a day of live music, food and fun. TreeFest!
This two-day outdoor reggae jam festival will be 4 p.m.- 2:30 a.m. Friday and 2 p.m.-2:30 a.m. Saturday at the Brick House Kitchen, 1575 Folly Road. Note that this is not a camping event. With live music from TreeHouse!, Ben Fagan & The Holy City Hooligans, Sun-Dried Vibes, Of Good Nature, Lionz of Zion, The Resolvers, South Street, Tidal Jive, Ras Dave and more, you’re sure to get your fill of reggae. Sugar and Spice Soiree
Tonight at Alhambra Hall, 131 Middle St., Mount Pleasant, Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina will host an evening featuring live music by Southern Flavor Bluegrass, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from Fork catering, and a live and silent auction. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the night will be a celebration of the services provided to mothers and babies across the state for more than 115 years. Tickets are $75, $125 per couple. This gala fundraiser, hosted by the Feline Freedom Coalition, will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday aboard the Carolina Queen paddleboat. Guests will enjoy cocktails and food, music by the Joe Clarke jazz quartet and dance performances by Fred Astaire dancers. The highlight of the evening will be the live and silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the programs of the coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to providing proactive solutions for feral cats living in colonies throughout the Charleston area.
