Beaujolais Nouveau

This special evening toasts one of France’s richest winemaking traditions: the century-old Beaujolais Nouveau celebration, marking the success of another year’s harvest.

Fish general manager and certified specialist of wine Jodie Battles has partnered with local distributor Advintage to present Charleston’s first taste of limited, high-caliber 2012 crus from the legendary Beaujolais wine region.

French master chef Nico Romo will serve a five-course French menu as sommeliers provide information about the five Beaujolais wine crus.

This tasting dinner takes place at 7 p.m. Friday in the upstairs dining room at Fish, 442 King St. The cost is $70, and seating is limited to 30 guests.

Dining for a cause

November is American Diabetes Month. To support this cause, Lowcountry Bistro is asking every customer during November to add $1 or more to his or her check as a donation to diabetes research.

In addition, Lowcountry Bistro, 49 S. Market St., will match a portion of the donations and donate $1 from all sales of the month’s specialty cocktail, The Only Tenn I See. Call 302-0290.

Fetching new concept

Jack Hurley, owner of Jack’s Cosmic Dogs, announced the closing of the West Ashley location at 817 Andrews Ave. The property will become Mex 1 Baja Cantina, a new concept of Southern California and Baja Mexico cuisine.

Hurley anticipates a mid-December opening.

Mex 1 is named after the Mexican highway on the Baja Peninsula that connects Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas.

The Baja Cantina will feature tacos, enchiladas, rice bowls and salads. There will be a full-service bar with tequila, craft beers and wines.

During the construction, Hurley will continue to serve hot dogs and his famous fries from the Cosmic Airstream in front of the store 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Books and a buffet

A special event will take place on Friday at the Heirloom Book Co., 123 King St., featuring Dr. Jim Casada, an outdoor writer, sportsman and Archibald Rutledge Scholar.

Casada will sign copies of his “Carolina Christmas,” along with other of his publications. At 6 p.m., cocktails will be served and venison will be tasted. A hunt buffet will follow at 7:30 p.m.

18th century display

Inspiration for holiday entertaining can be found at the Charleston Museum’s Heyward-Washington House with special 18th-century dining and entertaining tours at 4 p.m. Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11.

See elaborate table settings and period-appropriate faux food throughout the various entertaining spaces within the house.

Tour the circa 1740 kitchen building and learn about open-hearth cooking. Visit the laundry area, servants’ quarters and auxiliary kitchen herb garden.

Admission is $10, $5 for children 3-12; admission is free for Charleston Museum members and children under 3. Reservations are not required. The Heyward-Washington House is at 87 Church St.

Kickin’ cancer

For the fourth year, Kickin’ Chicken has announced its annual Month of Giving celebration.

With five Lowcountry locations and more than 250 employees, the Kickin’ Chicken will contribute $1 from every appetizer sale to Camp Happy Days and the Charleston and Summerville Miracle Leagues.

Individual store teams will compete against each other to raise the most money, and the winning stores’ funds will be matched by the owners of Kickin’ Chicken.

Spend like a local

Lowcountry Local First is celebrating the 2012 Buy Local Month through Dec. 15 in an effort to promote and drive traffic to local independent businesses during the holiday shopping season.

Presented by Kickin’ Chicken, Buy Local Month will kick off on “Buy Local Eve,” today, with a King Street holiday shop mob that will provide exclusive after-hours shopping from 6-8 p.m. at LLF member businesses. Tickets for the shop mob are $20 at the door. Tickets and a list participating merchants can be found at www.lowcountrylocalfirst.org/buylocalmonth.

Following the ShopMob, LLF will be holding a Buy Local Bash at the Kickin’ Chicken at 337 King St. from 8-10 p.m. Admission is free to shop mobbers, and the party will feature local libations and live music in celebration of supporting locally owned businesses.

LLF also will be partnering with the city of Charleston and King Street Marketing Group for the Marion Square Tree Lighting and Holiday Magic Stroll to take place Dec. 1.

Following the lighting, LLF will be raffling off a gift basket of local goodies to attendees.

King Street will be closed to vehicular traffic to feature local vendors, artisans, musicians performing holiday music and plenty of holiday-centric food and drinks.

Beachside oyster roast

Rita’s Seaside Grille at 2 Center St. on Folly Beach will host an oyster roast 3-6 p.m. Nov. 24.
