Slightly North of Broad turns 19 in December.

Oldies but goodies

Slightly North of Broad celebrates 19 years of award-winning food and great hospitality on Dec. 5 with a day full of specials for guests.

The celebration will kick off as chef Frank Lee brings back some oldie but goodie lunch menu items along with birthday cake for all lunch guests.

The party will continue during dinner service with a special four courses for $36 menu including favorite dishes from the past, in addition to a la carte service.

All day, Slightly North of Broad will be offering Maverick Specialty Cocktails for $5 and Maverick Private Label glasses of wine for $5 or $20 a bottle.

Stop by and pick the winner in the Maverick Spirits Challenge 5-8 p.m. Terressentia, the Charleston distiller that produces the Maverick Spirits will be on hand for tastings.

Slightly North of Broad was opened in December 1993 at 192 East Bay St. by Dick Elliott, David Marconi and Lee with the idea of offering fresh, local and affordable fare for the neighborhood.

The restaurant has re-ceived numerous awards and recognition, locally and nationally, in its nearly two decades and has become a culinary landmark in Charleston.

Teen chef contest

The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef Competition, now in its 14th year, is an opportunity for high school seniors in the U.S. and Canada interested in pursuing a culinary career to experience the excitement and discipline of the industry.

For the second year, the Culinary Scholarship Competition offers high school graduates the opportunity to compete against their peers, as well.

Selected finalists will participate in a cook-off competition at each participating Art Institutes school on March 2, judged by professional chefs and culinary faculty.

The winner in the high school senior competition at each participating Art Institutes school will earn a $4,000 tuition scholarship.

The second-place winner in the high school senior competition at each participating Art Institutes school will earn a $1,000 scholarship.

The winner in the high school graduate competition at each participating Art Institute will earn a $1,500 scholarship.

Green over wine

The Glass Onion restaurant will kick off the holidays with an expanded “green” wine list.

The West Ashley restaurant at 1219 Savannah Highway has revamped its wine list, which ranges from an organic Washington chardonnay to a sustainable Cotes du Rhones blend for wines offered by the glass.

They kicked off the new list Monday, and they will feature one of their new additions each week.

Oyster roast

The Dog & Duck will host post-Thanksgiving oyster roasts at the Belle Hall and Park West locations in Mount Pleasant.

The cost is $12 for all-you-can-eat oysters at 3 p.m., live music at 5 p.m. and other activities throughout the day.

Sponsored by Sweetwater Brewery, you can expect a variety of craft beers to be on hand and available for purchase.

Holiday events

Children and their adult charges are invited to snuggle up with a hot beverage and a fuzzy friend at the Teddy Bear Tea at 1 p.m. Dec. 9 and 16 in the Thoroughbred Club at Charleston Place.

The afternoon’s activities include a magic show, a live musician, an assortment of fresh sandwiches and baked goods, tea service for the adults and a variety of beverages for the children.

Each child will receive a teddy bear upon entrance, and each group will have a professional photograph to take home.

Local biscuits go big

December opening

Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse plans an early December opening at 2411 Mall Drive in North Charleston.

On the menu: an extensive salad bar and chicken, beef, pork and lamb. The restaurant will serve dinner daily with lunch and dinner service on Sundays.

Mark your calendar

The Charleston Restaurant Association will host the annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 27 at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant.

The 2013 event marks the 30th year of the festival.

The Lowcountry Oyster Festival, coined “the world’s largest oyster roast,” has been named one of the “top 20 events in the Southeast” by the Southeastern Tourism Society for the past 25 years.

Each year, the event brings in more than 10,000 guests who consume over 80,000 pounds of oysters.
