Now, now, Sloppy Cow.
As one of James Island’s newest restaurants, Sloppy Cow cuts a fine figure right down to the logo and tagline: “It’s what’s on the inside that counts.”
The facade is painted burnt orange, the interior featuring an open floor plan — a stark change from the Harbor View Road’s former occupant, Skibo’s 29412 Neighborhood Grill.
The walls are cast in lighter shades of green, the flooring stained concrete. Booths line the wall closest to the door, with the bar set next to the kitchen across from the entrance.
But the biggest change?
The menu trumpets killer smoked chicken nachos, homemade milkshakes, crispy fries and, most importantly, stuffed burgers ($10).
What’s on the inside, indeed.
Built from Angus beef, Sloppy Cow stows cheese, bacon, mushrooms, you name it, between two patties, then seals the edges to trap inside the ingredients.
The Cheesy Cow is a straightforward starter, a stuffed burger with three types of cheeses.
Meanwhile, the Spicy Cow takes on roasted jalapeno relish, jack cheese, chipotle onions and bacon, along with a tangy smear of spicy mayo.
And here’s a more ambitious choice: the Salty Goat, loaded with shaved country ham, goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and topped with a basil parmesan sauce.
By being stuffed, the burgers tend to cook a little longer, toughening up the exterior.
Sloppy Cow may not be your best option if you’re looking for a supremely soft, fat, juicy burger. But if you’re looking for a hearty, flavor-filled alternative, then you’ve arrived at the correct address.
