Kristen Wiig joins Will Ferrell in ‘Anchorman’ sequel

By Nardine Saad

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Kristen Wiig is joining the cast of Will Ferrell’s “Anchorman” sequel.

“Just found out Kristen Wiig officially on board for Anchorman 2. Cannonball!” director Adam McKay confirmed Monday on Twitter.

“Anchorman” costar Christina Applegate (aka Ron Burgundy’s lady love) corroborated the story with her own Tweet. “woohoo! That’s so great,” Applegate responded, later quipping, “So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for anchorman2. Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made.”

“Anchorman: The Legend Continues” will see the return of original stars Ferrell, Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and David Koechner, and continue the on-and-off-set shenanigans of the Channel 4 Evening News team.

“Bridesmaids” star Wiig, an “SNL” alum like Ferrell, is rumored to be playing the love interest of Carell’s mentally deficient meteorologist, according to MTV News. Maybe, for one night, they won’t be co-workers, they’ll be “co-people.” We also wouldn’t mind a Golden Globes-style matchup between Wiig and Ferrell, either.

Ferrell delivered the news, a la Ron Burgundy, about the follow-up to the 2004 comedy last spring on “Conan.”

“I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas,” he interrupted. “To my friends, in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England ... as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel for ‘Anchorman.’ It is official. There will be a sequel to ‘Anchorman.’ ”

The Judd Apatow-produced film is set to hit theaters Dec. 20.
