Given the fluid nature of restaurants, one has to appreciate creative repurposing. Such is the case with the Brown Dog Deli, formerly Brent’s on Broad.

Brent Petterson of the eponymous Brent’s on Broad is still on board, pairing with chef Wes Denney to create the new menu and update the venue.

The Brown Dog Deli still features a great outdoor patio. Only the interior reveals a retro look with vintage poster and album covers from classic artists such as The Kinks, Jethro Tull, Donovan and Supertramp. The restaurant’s background music spans roughly the same period.

The menu cuts across two sections at the Brown Dog Deli: One side notes the salads and sandwiches, the other side frankfurters.

The deli side revels in the classics: tuna salad, chicken salad, along with the Reuben, Cuban, French dip and meatball sub.

Also popular: a traditional muffaletta layered with Italian meats and olive spread ($9.50), and the French onion grilled cheese ($7.95) made up of roast beef, caramelized onions and a cheese trifecta: gruyere, baby Swiss and provolone.

Plus, the kitchen also makes a braised pork sandwich with a Coca-Cola reduction ($7.95), and the subtly titled PBR ($7.95) with prosciutto, basil-artichoke pesto and balsamic reduction.

Each hot dog is a Hebrew National brand beef frank served Chicago-style on a toasted poppy seed bun, each one limited only by the Brown Dog Deli’s imagination.

There’s the Hot Wing ($4.25), rightfully outfitted with buffalo sauce, Ranch dressing, blue cheese and celery, plus provolone and coleslaw.

The Chipotle Dog takes a robust turn, stacked with chopped bacon, bright green dill relish, onions, diced tomatoes, gouda cheese and, naturally, chipotle sauce.

The hot dogs cost roughly $4-$6 apiece, a bit more than the price points over at Jack’s Cosmic Dogs or Perfectly Frank’s.

But we do appreciate the flavor, texture and sharp snap of the Hebrew National.

As for the Brown Dog, the same sentiment applies: We certainly appreciate what they’ve done with the place.
