Fittingly, February is American Heart Month, when matters of the heart, both romantic and health, converge. And on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, the Charleston area hosts an event that’s sure to make hearts race.
The third annual Go Red Heart Run 5K is at 9 a.m. Saturday at Patriots Point, starting and finishing near the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina pavilion.
Just like events held near St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July and Christmas, Go Red’s organizers urge people to wear red, heart-themed costumes or red dresses (including guys), the latter for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign. Prizes will be given to the best red dressed.
Go Red is organized by Stephanie Seay Carter in honor of her mother, Robin Seay, who died of a heart attack at 47. Carter holds the event to help make people more aware that heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 causes of death, respectively, among women in the United States.
Also, in an effort to lure more serious runners to the charity event, Go Red is registered to be the U.S. Track and Field 5K championship race for South Carolina.
Packet pickup and late registration is 5-8 p.m. Friday and 7-8:15 a.m. Saturday at Lookout Pavilion, 20 Patriots Point Blvd.
Registration costs $35 online or $38 with a mail-in form. A pre-race dinner, including salad bar, grilled chicken, wild mushroom ravioli and more, will be held during registration Friday. Cost is $20. www.muschealth.com/goredrun
11th Save the Light
Meanwhile, another race on Saturday morning celebrates one of the most romantic landmarks in Charleston: the Morris Island lighthouse.
The 11th Save the Light Half-Marathon and 5K started in 2002 (but skipped 2007) as an effort by the Save the Light organization to raise awareness and funds to save the 136-year-old lighthouse, which was and is in danger because of erosion and years of neglect.
This year’s event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on Folly Beach, starting and ending near the Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier.
To sign up for the race, go to The Tides Hotel, 1 Center St., on Folly from 4-7 p.m. Friday or 7-8 a.m. Saturday. Late registration fees are $45 for the half-marathon and $30 for the 5K. www.actioncarolina.com/stl.html
