Dollar Days: Outdoor events abound with oyster roasts, music

With spring almost upon us (it begins March 20), nicer weather — hopefully! — is on the way as the events calendar really starts ramping up.

So far, the weather this weekend looks promising with little chance of rain and temperatures in the high 50s and low 60s — perfect weather for an oyster roast or two and numerous other outdoor events.

Shuckin’ in the Park

This 14th annual oyster roast at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner is a family affair, offering kids’ activities, a jump castle, live entertainment from Custom 4+2 and more.

Gates at the park open at noon Saturday with the fun beginning at 1 p.m. and running until 6 p.m.

Oyster buckets will be served up for $7 each, with a variety of food from local vendors also available. Small coolers are allowed.

Admission is $3 in advance and $5 at the gate; food tickets can be purchased inside the gate.

Attendees are asked to leave pets and golf carts at home.

Law Riders roast

The Law Riders Motorcycle Club, a group of current and retired law enforcement officers, will host its 17th annual oyster roast on Saturday.

The rain-or-shine event will be held noon-4 p.m. at Club Ocean, 192 College Park Road in Ladson.

Featuring all-you-can-eat oysters, hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, a bike show by the Faith Riders and live music by Broken Arrow, advance tickets are a steal at $10. The price goes up to $20 at the door.

The event also will feature vendors, raffles and door prizes.

Drop into Spring

Ever surfed indoors?

You’ll have a chance Sunday at this fest and surf competition at Mad River, 32 N. Market St.

Featuring a mechanical surf competition (think mechanical bull but surfboard instead), live music, limbo, beach fun and more, this event is sure to entertain.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and is family-friendly until 9 p.m.

Food and drink specials will be available, with VIP open bar packages available for $25 in advance. Find out more at saltykidz.org.

All proceeds will go to Salty Kidz, an organization that provides opportunities in water sports, environmental education and exploration of nature to youths, especially those who are underprivileged or at-risk.

C of C Barn Jam

On Saturday, Awendaw Green will host a number of College of Charleston student musicians for this concert benefiting Carolina Children’s Charity.

The event will feature performances by The Lungs, The After English, Estee Gabay and her band, Headrush, The Dunder Chiefs, Donnie Dies and Tyler Boone Band, with singer-songwriters Stephanie Schecter, Gabrielle Powell and Shannon Vogt performing between sets.

Doors open at 2 p.m., and the show begins at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5.
