Home Team is tops
Southern Living magazine has revealed the 2013 ’Cue Awards in its June issue, which hit newsstands May 24.
The awards honor the best rib joints in the South, as determined by Southern Living readers. More than 13,000 fans rallied behind their favorite “Rib-Stickin’ Joints” and voted over a one-week period.
Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ in Charleston was named the rib champ, with Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q named a runner-up.
The ribs at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ are described in the magazine as such: “Aaron Siegel breaks all the old-school BBQ rules at this juke joint-inspired hangout. When it comes to ribs, he’s a purist: red oak, a simple dry rub, no basting, no sauce.”

Travel & Leisure magazine’s World’s Best Awards survey ranks the locally owned Wentworth Mansion as the top spot in the U.S. for best service and No. 2 in the world, trailing The Peninsula in Hong Kong by just one-tenth of a point.
Rankings are based on reader votes collected in a survey.

Fresh off its recent nationally televised appearance on NBC’s “Today” show with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, Peninsula Grill has announced that its popular Ultimate Coconut Cake has been issued a trademark by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Peninsula Grill owner Hank Holliday noted that, “The Ultimate Coconut Cake has taken on a life of its own and is more popular than ever, with sales increasing every year. When coupled with numerous copycat attempts, we concluded that it was time to have it trademarked.”
The cake has been refined by the Peninsula Grill executive pastry chefs, Esthi Stefenelli and Claire Chapman, as documented in the recently published “Served With Style” cookbook. The 12-pound cake can be purchased daily for $100, plus the cost of shipping. It serves 20 generous portions.

Go green for charity
Ted’s Butcherblock is teaming up with Mount Pleasant’s Fire House Casual Living to raffle off a Big Green Egg to benefit the local nonprofit organization Feed the Need.
Tickets will be available for purchase at Ted’s Butcherblock for $5 each or five for $20 through June 22, when a winner will be drawn at Ted’s annual Backyard BBQ Bash.
Now in its third year, the Big Green Egg Giveaway has raised almost $4,000 for the organization, which rallies the local culinary community to help feed the hungry.
Ted’s annual Backyard BBQ Bash on June 22 will take place noon-5 p.m. and will include grilled Painted Hill burgers, beer can chicken, local craft beer on tap and live music from The Bushels.

Fundraiser happy hour
The Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired — Charleston will host an awareness and fundraising happy hour 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at Midtown Bar & Grill.
It is suggested that a $5 donation be given at the door.

Tonight at Five Loaves Cafe in Mount Pleasant, join Camp Happy Days from 5 p.m. to close to help raise money for the nonprofit’s summer camp program.
Five Loaves, 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., will donate 10 percent of all food and beverage purchases to go toward Camp Happy Days.
Tonight, Bacco Italian Restaurant at 976 Houston Northcutt Blvd. in Mount Pleasant will host an Italian Beer Dinner at 6 p.m. The six-course dinner is in collaboration with the Charleston Beer Exchange and will feature Birrificio Del Ducato, Del Borgo, Del Como and Grado Plato. The cost is $65, plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required. Call 884-6969.
On June 16 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., Carbs & Carbs will take place at Bacco. The event will be a public car show featuring Italian and other imports as well as the carbs of a pasta buffet. The car show is free; the buffet is $15.

New GM at High Cotton
High Cotton has named Justin Coleman as general manager.
Coleman, a native New Yorker, graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science in environmental economics. At the same time, he worked in a small French restaurant and pursued his passion for food and wine at The French Culinary Institute.
He worked at Balthazar in New York for Keith McNally and The Mark restaurant for Jean-George Vongerichten.

Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto bring many new mouths to feed to the Lowcountry. To accommodate those attending the festival, Circa 1886 will offer extended hours for pre- and post-theater dinner options, opening a half-hour earlier at 5 p.m. and closing a half-hour later at 10 p.m. through June 9. In other news, Circa’s chef Marc Collins has announced his new summer menu for the carriage house restaurant on the grounds of the Wentworth Mansion. From antelope to local flounder, seasonal salads and chef Scott Lovorn’s peanut butter pluff mudd ice cream, Circa turns the menu page from spring to summer.
The farm-to-table dinners served by the Village Bakery in Mount Pleasant have ended. Breakfast and lunch service continues at 125 Pitt St.
Chef Robert Carter has announced that reservations for parties of five or more are now accepted for the Carter’s Kitchen Sunday brunch from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Carter’s Kitchen is at 148 Civitas St. in I’On, Mount Pleasant. Call 284-0840.
Dellz Deli now has a sister restaurant at 511 Rutledge Ave. Dellz Uptown, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant, is open. Check the Facebook page for hours, as they are adjusted daily.
