Some of my fondest memories from my college days were cruising around in my convertible belting out Journey tunes with my best friend.
While we're now both what could be termed "professional adults," a recent reunion at my wedding had us reminiscing about our epic road adventures. Though a slew of new songs would be added to our playlist, we still both fully admit that Journey will always play a special role in our friendship.
As such, I can't help but think of him when I found out that the nationally acclaimed Journey tribute band Departure will be closing out Party at the Point's summer season on Friday.
With an absolutely incredible song catalog, Journey in 2005 was named in a USA Today opinion poll the fifth best American rock band in history, having sold nearly 50 million albums in the U.S. alone. In 2009, their 1981 classic "Don't Stop Believin' " became the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history.
Billed as Charleston's "premier happy hour concert series," Party at the Point will close its 14th season at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, 20 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant.
Departure, a group that after six years together has become "the most respected Journey tribute band in the nation," will perform all the hits as attendees enjoy a full cash bar, including $2 draft beer while they lasts, as well as hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and fish tacos.
Tickets for the finale are available at the gate for $7; gates open at 5:30 p.m. Free on-street parking will be available, as will valet parking for $5. For more information, go to www.CharlestonPartyAtThePoint.com.
Party at the Point will return for the 2014 fall series Sept. 5-Oct. 10.
Friday night has some serious competition as there are two other concert events taking place in addition to the Party at the Point finale. I'll leave it to you to decide what to attend.
James Island County Park's summer concert series Reggae Nights continues its 2014 season with a performance by ReggaeInfinity.
The Columbia-based ReggaeInfinity specializes in original roots reggae with a positive message as well as the occasional cover song. Promising to get everyone up and dancing, the music is suitable for all ages.
Hungry concert-goers will be able to purchase Caribbean-style dishes and other festival foods at the event. Vendors will be on-site displaying local handmade crafts and souvenirs, all available for purchase.
Gates open at 7:30 p.m. with music starting at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults (13 and up) and are available at the gate; children 12 and under get in free.
The second of four shows, the Reggae Nights series continues with shows in July (Da'Gullah Rootz) and August (Mystic Vibrations). Go to CharlestonCountyParks.com/Reggae to find out more.
Music on the Green
Another music event taking place on Friday, this one at Freshfields Village, is the annual Music on the Green concert series. This event is free.
From 6-9 p.m., enjoy live music from the Rubberband, which performs a high-energy mix of disco, reggae, hip-hop, funk, R&B and rock hits.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Attendees are encouraged to bring a beach chair or blanket.

After work, pick up your pup and head over to Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant for an evening of socializing, live music and more from 5-8 p.m.
The V-Tones will perform as the Charleston Festival Foods truck serves up tasty treats. Outside coolers and alcohol are prohibited.
And remember, all pets must be leashed outside the dog park.
Admission to the event is free with the $1 gate charge.
