There are some music historians who honor a genre's origins through accurate reinterpretation, and then there are actual music historians who study a style's roots and evolution academically.

The Sonoma, Calif.-based nine-member troupe Groundation manages to do both with its groomed reggae-jazz mishmashes and bandleader professor.

Harrison Stafford started the group in 1998 with Sonoma State University Jazz Program students. The following year, he began teaching the university's first History of Reggae Music course, which he taught until 2001 when Groundation's popularity began to rise.

Taking its name from the Rastafarian holiday celebrated in honor of the believed messiah Haile Selassie's first Jamaican visit, Groundation seeks to represent authentic reggae music while introducing traditional elements of funk and jazz along with Latin and African rhythms to the mix.

The band's tenth studio album, "A Miracle," will be released in October.

Groundation will perform a special two-night stand at The Pour House, 1977 Maybank Highway, this weekend with openers The Resolvers. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday night's shows are $18 in advance, $22 the day of the show, and are available at the door or online at Doors open at 9 p.m. with the show starting at 10 p.m. both nights.

JJ Lawhorn

At just 17, Virginia's self-proclaimed "Original Good Ol' Boy" JJ Lawhorn signed a deal with Colt Ford's Average Joe's Entertainment after being scouted through his YouTube videos.

Two years later, his 2013 debut soared to No. 20 on the U.S. country chart, selling 4,000 copies in its first week behind the buzz of the early release singles "Sittin' On a Tailgate" and "You Can Tell a Man by His Truck."

Looking like a young Ryan Gosling with a pure country style similar to Jason Aldean, Lawhorn's success seemed certain from the start.

JJ Lawhorn will perform Friday at The Windjammer, 1008 Ocean Blvd. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 the day of the show. Doors open at 9 p.m.
