Karen Silvestro will help you find the 'Perfect Man'

By Vikki Matsis, Special to The Post and Courier

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Karen Silvestro's painting, "Pride Wars," (on Page 4) shows the complex dynamic between two people in a relationship.

The male, symbolized as a peacock with breathtaking feathers, is staring down the beautiful woman, and each one is determined to stand their ground.

"I'm fascinated by people: their emotions, their stories, their secrets, their interpersonal relationships. The array of psychological and spiritual ingredients that make them beautifully complicated human beings are my muse," she said.

"Paperdoll: The Search for the Perfect Man" will be Silvestro's first solo show at the Robert Lange Studio. It is guest curated by Charleston Scene writer Olivia Pool and Art Pimp.

"Paperdoll" will run until the end of August and will showcase new paintings, charcoal drawings and cutout paper doll books that will allow guests to create their perfect man. Silvestro's background as an illustrator shines through the humor in her artwork.

Her stunning oil paintings are highly symbolic narratives; each one has a story unfold in the details. In "Liar, Liar" the wallpaper design is as important as the subject matter; the painting provokes deep reflection about the lies we tell ourselves in order to get through the day.

Silvestro's artwork reflects a woman observing her culture as a critical thinker.

"My shows are all very conceptual, and sometimes touch upon themes from which many shy away. Society often convinces people that they should look, feel, act and simply be a certain way. I find beauty in the truth of our life stories, and strive to show real people, real feelings and real stories with my paintings," she said.

Meet the artist Friday night at Robert Lange Gallery for the opening reception of "Paperdoll."

Next Event: Friday, Robert Lange Studios, 2 Queen St. 5:30-8:30 p.m., Free.
