Dive deep into the treasures of French cinema

By Rebekah Bradford, Special to The Post and Courier

Thursday, August 26, 2010

The College of Charleston's annual French Film Festival is this weekend (Aug. 26-29) with "Persepolis" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" being two of the films that will be shown during the festival.

This week's trivia is about French film, naturellement. Current Head2Head winner Corie Young is going up against Brad Sanders, who works in marketing.

QUESTIONS

1 Known as a leader of the French New Wave Cinema, he directed "Breathless" in 1960.

2 Name the director of "The 400 Blows," "Jules and Jim" and "The Last Metro."

3 What iconic French actress starred in "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg?"

4 Who played Cyrano in the 1990 remake of "Cyrano de Bergerac?"

5 In 1996, this actress won an Oscar for her role in "The English Patient."

6 Krzysztof Kieslowski is a Polish director, but his most famous film series is a trilogy that explores French society. Name the series.

7 This 1946 French romantic fantasy is the film adaptation of two French fairy tales directed by Jean Cocteau. Name the film.

8 Released in 1929 in Paris, this film by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali is considered one of the best-known surrealist films of the avant-garde movement.

9 Audrey Tautou played a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her in this 2001 film.

10 Who was the last French actor/actress to win an Academy Award?

CORIE'S ANSWERS

1 Um, I don't really know much about French film.

2 I don't know.

3 Catherine Deneuve. She's the only one I can think of who's "iconic."

4 I think I saw this, but I can't remember the name.

5 Binoche. I think the first name's Juliette?

6 Sorry, I really don't even have a clue.

7 "Beauty and the Beast"?

8 Oh, my gosh, these questions are killing me.

9I'm sorry.

10 Well, I'm going to say Juliette Binoche, but that would be too easy.

BRAD'S ANSWERS

1 No idea.

2 Same as the last answer.

3 Ditto.

4 The same.

5 Again.

6 No clue.

7 Can I guess? "Cinderella."

8 Don't know it.

9 "Amelie." My girlfriend loved that movie.

10 Don't know her name.

CONCLUSION

Corie makes it three in a row despite not really knowing very much about French film. The Head2Head trivia champ will return next week to defend her title. And don't forget to check out the film festival this weekend.

CORRECT ANSWERS

1 Jean-Luc Godard

2 Francois Truffaut

3 Catherine Deneuve

4 Gerard Depardieu

5 Juliette Binoche

6 "Blue, White and Red"
