I already had ventured to the Palmetto Ale House a couple of times before meeting their bartender--once for a nightcap after a long workday, and then again to grab a quick bite.
The table service was speedy, and bartender Tony Ashcraft was friendly and helpful. Stop in at the old Necter location on James Island, and see what the fuss is about. You'll like what they did with the place.
Q: How long have you been with Palmetto Ale House?
A: Since they opened this location, May 10.
Q: Where had you previously bartended?
A: I worked at Mallie's Sports Bar, which is located in a suburb of Detroit (I'm originally from Michigan). It's been featured on the show "Man v. Food," for the enormous burger.
Q: What's the best thing about working at Palmetto Ale House?
A: Working with the people. There's an awesome, positive attitude among the employees here.
Q: What's the best thing to order off the menu?
A: It would have to be the Cajun Chicken pasta. Give it a try.
Q: What's your favorite off the Specialty Drinks menu?
A: I love the Blue Hawaiian. It's Malibu banana, Malibu coconut, pineapple and cranberry juice and blue curacao.
Q: What beer do your customers love?
A: That would be Stella Artois -- it's been very popular. But I would also suggest the Drifter. It's subtly fruity without being overpowering, and it's good for summer.
Q: What shot are you an expert at making?
A: My pineapple upside-down cake. I like it with Malibu pineapple, vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and grenadine. You have to drop the grenadine inside, instead of shaking it, to get it right.
Q: What's the grossest thing you've been asked to make?
what: Palmetto Ale House
where: 951 Folly Road
phone: 277-2410
A: I just made a shaved beaver yesterday. It was Grand Marnier, peach schnapps and Red Bull. I tried it myself -- not good at all!
Q: What's your favorite summer cocktail?
A: Beer. Any kind.
Q: Have you had to cut someone off?
A: Oh, yes, absolutely. I almost had to do it last night.
Q: How would you improve the nightlife of Charleston?
A: I think the cops can be a tad too strict sometimes, but other than that, I think it's great.
