Beth Meredith - Scenester

Job: Change agent for New Carolina: S.C.'s Council on Competitiveness. I work with the leaders of companies in various clusters to help them be more innovative, entrepreneurial and collaborative. Lately, my focus is on Charleston's Creative Parliament, ASTRA, S.C. BIO and the Distressed Areas Task Force.

Song that best describes you: "Shout Out Loud," Amos Lee

On a Saturday night, you are usually: Eating and being merry with my husband, Rob, and friends -- there is so much good food in Charleston to enjoy!

Favorite event in Charleston and why: Pecha Kucha Night Charleston: It serves as an exciting and inspiring moment in time that unites people in the creative economy to share their ideas, works and thoughts, and at the same time, it celebrates that the creative industries are an important economic development driver and job creator for our region.

Talents/Hobbies: On-again off-again martial artist, chef wanna-be (I enjoy trying new recipes out on family and friends), fishing and relaxing by the water.

CD in your CD player right now: Alicia Keys, "Songs in A Minor."

Best thing about Charleston: Charleston is a small town with a metropolitan attitude. I love the variety: wine and food festivals, sporting events and culture. One weekend you can be attending Charleston Fashion Week and the next touring some of the most beautiful gardens Charleston has to offer.

Worst thing about Charleston: Sand gnats! It's almost time for those little suckers to rear their ugly heads again!

Favorite book: "American Shaolin" by Matthew Polly.

In love?: My beloved and my friend, Rob Meredith.

If your friends described you in one word, what would it be?: Effervescent.

How would you describe yourself, in one word: Outgoing.

Things you do in your spare time: I love to entertain. We just finished a new kitchen renovation, so I can do more of it! I am on the alumni board of my alma mater, the College of Charleston, and when I am not spending time with them, I am helping the Junior League of Charleston find the next fundraiser that will support our mission of combating hunger and homelessness. Now that it is warmer, you will find me on the boat and walking our dog, Jackson, around the neighborhood.

Biggest accomplishment: Working as the executive director of the Coastal Conservation Association of South Carolina right after college. I got to work with some wonderful recreational fisherman who wanted to protect the marine life of South Carolina. I also learned how to bait my own hook and occasionally even catch a fish! It was truly a wonderful experience to promote fishery issues and rehabilitate some of the reefs off our coast.
